Coin Sliding Lab

You’ll need:

  • Toy car (large enough and flat bottom, like a box with wheels)
  • Penny
  • Quarter
  • Ramp
  • One or two boxes (to hold up ramp)
  • Ruler
  • Books

Table:

I used a table similar to this one that I created:

Directions:

  1. Place the car on the ramp, held up by the box/boxes. Put the books at the end of the ramp to stop the car before it rolls off the ramp.
  2. Put one coin in the back of the car (all the way)
  3. Pull the car back 10 cm
  4. Release the car and let it stop at the books
  5. Measure how far the coin slid forwards (from the back of the coin) and record it in the table.
  6. Repeat steps 2-5 twice more.
  7. Repeat steps 2-6 with the other coin.
  8. Increase the distance by 10 cm and repeat steps 2-6 with each coin, then doing it again, increasing the distance by 10 cm every time until you reach 40 cm.
  9. To finish filling out the table, average out the distances of each measurement.
